For the last decades, cities have changed significantly because of rapid urban population growth. This growth resulted in urban sprawl and caused in inefficient land use, low density, car dependencies and high segregation of uses. Sustainable neighborhood should address the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, economic and social aspects in a balanced manner. The presentation will address the characteristics of a sustainable neighborhood and approaches to achieve sustainable development.

Dr Lama Zagha holds a PhD degree in Architecture with emphasis on Housing from Oxford Brookes University in England. She obtained a Master of Science Degree in Building Design from Arizona State University and a Bachelor Degree in Architectural Engineering from the Jordan University. She is Certified Associate Teacher in Higher Education, England. She is currently a Senior Infrastructure Advisor at the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). She worked as a consultant for Dar Al Omran Infrastructure and Environment, Irbid Development Corporation and for Khayrat Belady Company for Agricultural Projects Management. Dr Zagha was the Principal of the Planning and Urban Design Unit at Arabtech Jardaneh. She taught at Al Albayt University and Applied Science University in Jordan. She published articles in professional journals addressing urban issues. She serves as a board member at the Jordanian Planning Forum and previously served as member in the Central Body of Jordan Engineers ssociation.
