Before we launch Augustine into the sea, we ask God Almighty for His blessings. We do this through a traditional ceremony called Barasanji. Barasanji is an Islamic tradition that is still often done in Southern Sulawesi. It is done by reciting the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad PBUH life history, and His noble qualities that can be used as examples for humankind. Together we pray that the road ahead will be smooth and sound.
After the Barasanji, the people of Tanahberu gather to have their meals, cooked by the wives of the ship builders, on the deck of Augustine, while thanking God for all His blessings.
The next morning, we start to launch the ship. Annyorong Lopi is a Buginese word that means push (annyorong) ship (lopi), or loosely translates to ship launching. It is a traditional ship launching method that does not use any machine, but rather people, lots of people. Teamwork and solidarity are key for the success of this ship launching method.
Augustine is ready to launch to the water for the first time. Hoping to bring joy and happiness to families and make their dreams come true.
