in this Lesson:
Fluid: Any substance that can flow and does not have a fixed shape but takes the shape of its container, such as liquids and gases.
▌The relation between the mass (m) and the volume (V) for
a group of bodies of the same substance is represented graphically
by a straight line starting from the origin and inclined at an angle
on the horizontal axis as shown in the opposite graph, hence
the density of the substance of these bodies can be determined by
finding the slope of the straight line:
The relative density of a substance: It is the ratio of the density of the substance at a given temperature to the density of pure water at 4 °C.
▌The relative density has no unit of measurement because it is a ratio between two physical quantities having the same unit of measurement.
Hydrometer (liquid density meter)
Uses:
1. Measuring the density of liquids.
2. Measuring the relative density of liquids.
Principle:
* Its operating principle is based on the law of buoyancy where after putting the hydrometer in a liquid, it partially sinks depending on the density of the liquid.
Water density
▌Generally, the density of a liquid decreases with the increase in its temperature such that
when increasing the temperature of a liquid, the intermolecular spaces in it increase,
resulting in an increase in the volume of the liquid while its mass remains constant, hence
its density decreases.
▌When studying the effect of temperature change on the density of pure water, it is found that
its behavior between 0°C and 4°C deviates from the behavior of all other liquids.
This unique behavior of water can be illustrated graphically as follows:
Water currents in the oceans
The differences in water density in different parts of oceans are one of the causes of water
currents including vertical water currents in oceans where the density of water in different
regions in oceans is affected by the following factors:
