in this Lesson:
Adaptation
It refers to the behavioral or physical traits of the living organism that help it to survive better in its ecosystem.
organisms.

First: Structural (Anatomical) adaptations
Structural adaptations
They include the changes in the structure and shape of parts of the living organism's body that help it to survive in its environment.

Second: Behavioral adaptations
Behavioral adaptations
They include certain behaviors or actions, whether they are acquired or inherited, that help the living organisms to face the harsh conditions or to better utilize the available resources.

Examples:
1. Whales produce sounds that allow them to communicate and hunt their preys.
2. The migration of some fish between fresh water and salt water to reproduce and survive, such as salmon fish .
Life cycle of salmon fish
Salmon fish begin their life in fresh water, then move to the sea where they spend most of their adult life, then they return to rivers to reproduce, which is done as follows:

Third: Physiological (Functional) adaptations
Physiological (Functional) adaptations
Adaptations or modifications in the way that living organisms perform their biological (vital) functions which enable them to survive in their environment.

Note
Viperfish that lives in tropical regions of the major oceans is considered from the famous examples for the structural and physiological adaptations of the deep-sea fish, where:
- It is characterized by having flexible skeleton to withstand the high pressure in depths.
- It has high levels of hemoglobin in its blood to adapt with the low oxygen levels in depths.
